Dolomite prairies are one of the rarest types in the world. Here we have a large prairie with rare species. Huge expanses of dolomite bedrock was exposed by the Kankakee Torrent and not much soil has blown in over the last 19,000 years. An amazing prairie featuring plains prickly pear, quillwort and other rare plants. Access is convoluted, but you can take north (Kankakee) river road to Blodgett Road, north till you get to a small parking lot close to Interstate 55 where big power lines cross. Afterward, we will retire to the Twisted Anchor for drinks, food and conversation across the Des Plaines River from McKinley Woods Forest Preserve (how any times have you looked across the river at this place?).
