Carl Hansen Woods, a 600-acre Cook County Forest Preserve, is home to the Shoe Factory Road Prairie Nature Preserve. Formed thousands of years ago, this remnant dry gravel prairie is perched on the crest and slopes of a glacial deposit, or kame, of sand and gravel. The well-drained soil and exposure of the slopes to sun and wind combine to create a hot, dry habitat for rare prairie species that are well adapted for this harsh environment. On the more protected east-facing slope is a woodland community dominated by bur oak. Outside the Nature Preserve, restoration efforts are transforming agricultural fields and farm homesteads into healthy native tallgrass prairie, oak woodland, savanna and wetland habitats.
Meet at the main parking lot of Carl R. Hansen Woods, Poplar Creek Trail, Elgin, IL 60120
