Flora Prairie in Boone County is a 10-acre site containing a gravel hill prairie with limestone outcrops and a burr oak savanna. It was featured in Jack's article "Adventures with Plant Lists" in the Summer 2020 issue of The Harbinger. After the tour we will have a picnic lunch at nearby Oak Ridge forest preserve where there are restrooms. After lunch, we drive about 20 minutes to a pioneer cemetery prairie named for the Beach family. This site is only 3.6 acres but is an excellent example of a gravel hill prairie. Led by Jack Shouba, Brian Hale, and Daniel Pohl.

There is nothing left on Earth like what is left in Westchester, IL of all places, at the highest quality black-soil wet prairie of its size. Wolf Road Prairie represents the transition from oak savanna to tallgrass prairie and wetlands with some of the most diverse and dense ecological communities in the temperate world, and it represents an essential form of infrastructure more efficient, cheap, and indiscriminate than anything people can build. And the thing is: the prairie largely was made by people - it just wasn't built. Come and experience that thing which lent Illinois its nickname - the Prairie State. To learn more before you go, check out Save the Prairie Society on Facebook, @wolfroadprairie on Instagram.

We will wander Wolf Road, break for lunch, then explore Hickory Lane if time allows.
