Spring on the Prairie - James Woodworth
James Woodworth Prairie Preserve, 9845 N Milwaukee Ave, Glenview, IL 60025, USA

See a high quality tallgrass prairie in the gorgeous full bloom of spring! James Woodworth Prairie is a 5-acre remnant of Grade A black soil prairie and swale, spared from development in the 1950s by prairie advocates and currently owned by the University of Illinois at Chicago. In mid-May, the prairie is carpeted with species such as wood betony, violet wood sorrel, yellow stargrass, hoary puccoon, prairie phlox, bastard toadflax, Seneca snakeroot, alumroot, and many others!
Hike leader Erin Faulkner has been conducting research and assisting with prairie management at JWP since 2002 and knows its botanical treasures like the back of her hand.

The parking lot at the interpretive center only holds a few cars; if it fills up, alternate parking can be found across Milwaukee Ave at the Salvation Army Thrift Store. The site is pretty small and vegetation is short, so you can't miss us! Give a holler from the parking lot and we'll direct you to a trail.

Hike the trail at Illinois' first nature preserve with your fellow native plant enthusiasts! See dozens of rare natives and spring wildflowers in multiple unique and rare habitats including beach dunes and pannes.

You already have the day off, come join us at 9:30 AM at the Nature Center, rain or shine. Dress for the weather and be prepared to get your feet wet: we recommend wearing sandals or waterproof boots.

After a lunch at Culver's (or bring your own) we usually drive a few minutes north to Chiwaukee Prairie for the afternoon, which often has wet trails. The trip to Chiwaukee is optional, but spectacular.

Event title: BoloriaFen and Sedge Meadow Nature Preserve

Date and time: July 18th 9:30-~11:30
Meeting location: 7219 Millburne Court in Bull Valley; the McAndrews Glensubdivision
    Event description:

Boloria Fen and Sedge Meadow Nature Preserve issignificant for its relict natural communities. A high quality gramminoid fenand sedge meadow are the most outstanding features of the site. The sedgemeadow is dominated by common tussock sedge (Carex stricta). Other, moreunusual or rare species include; prairie star sedge (C. interior),tufted lake sedge (C. vesicaria), narrow- leaved loosestrife (Lysimachiaquadriflora), tufted loosestrife (Lysimachia thyrsiflora), poisonsumac (Rhus vernix), turtle head (Chelone glabra) and others.Important fen community plants have also been documented and include swampthistle (Cirsium muticum), fen willow herb (Epilobium leptophyllum),grass-of-parnassus (Parnassia glauca), fen betony (Pedicularislanceolata), skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus), and Ohiogoldenrod (Solidago ohioensis). Although few in number, these fenindicator species are expected to increase with restoration efforts.

Two other important relict natural communitiesoccurring within the preserve are mesic oak savanna and dry-mesic oak woodland. While degraded, due to past livestock grazing and elimination of fire, thesenatural communities contain numerous old and very large oak and hickory trees.Initial restoration efforts focused on removal of invasive trees and brush andthe re-establishment of native grasses and forbs. Restoration of the oaksavanna and oak woodland natural communities on the upland portions of the sitewill also enhance/restore the natural ground water flow that sustains thenearby gramminoid fen and sedge meadow.

Boloria Fen and Sedge Meadow was added to theIllinois Natural Areas Inventory in October, 2004 as a category I Natural Areasupporting a high quality fen wetland.
